17 English as a Second Language (ESL) Call 559.327.2863 · Marcus Terrazas ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) QUARTER DATES 1st Quarter 8/22/22 - 10/28/22 2nd Quarter 11/1/2022 - 1/20/2023 Registration Procedure for ESL: ■ You must be at least 18 years old. ■ Fill out a registration form online at ■ The testing coordinator will contact you to schedule an orientation and placement test ■ If you do not show up for your scheduled test, you will not be able to register until the next term. ■ On testing day, bring a government issued photo I.D. or passport. ESL Morning and eveningESL classes are designed for adultswhowish to improve theirEnglish language skills through instruction in reading, writing, and listening. Computer based curriculum is included at all levels. Classes prepare students to: ■ Improve English reading, writing, and speaking skills ■ Obtain a better job ■ Become more involved in their children’s education ■ Learn to communicate family health needs ■ Become involved in community activities and learn citizenship skills The CASAS reading placement test will determine your class level. No one may enter after testing begins and no children are allowed in the testing room or on campus. Students will be post-tested at the end of eachquarter to see if they will advance to the next class level. Fifteen credits of lower level Englishmay be transferred towards your high school diploma. CONVERSATION / PRONUNCIATION Have fun conversing with other students on relevant, real world topics and events. Practice the most common challenges in sound spelling patterns, syllables, word endings, rhythms, and intonations. The N 400 is explained in detail as students fill out the form in class. U.S. history and government are integrated into the discussion of the 100 questions (Civics), and in preparation for the reading andwriting portions of the test. The teacher prepares a binder for each student to organize important documents to bring to their scheduled meeting with the USCIS. The teacher will also conduct a simulated interview towards the end of the semester. In addition , a visit to the local USCIS office (either in person or virtually) affords students afirst hand experience ofwhat to expectwhen it is time for their test. Topics covered include technology vocabulary, searching the internet, sending and receiving emails, and usingMicrosoftOffice programs.
