17 English as a Second Language (ESL) Call 559.327.2863 · Maria Wyatt ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) QUARTER DATES 1st Quarter 8/21/2023 - 10/26/2023 2nd Quarter 10/30/2023 - 1/19/2024 Registration Procedure for ESL: ■ You must be at least 18 years old ■ Fill out a registration form online at www clovisadulteducation com ■ The testing coordinator will contact you to schedule an orientation and placement test ■ If you do not show up for your scheduled test, you will not be able to register until the next term. ■ On testing day, bring a government issued photo ID or passport ■ All classes are offered free of charge ESL CLASSES ESL Classes are designed for adults who wish to improve their English language skills. There are morning and evening classes for beginning, intermediate, and advanced learners Instruction includes listening, reading, writing and speaking skills presented in a fun yet challenging learning environment Computer based curriculum complements lessons and reinforces learning the content Classes prepare students to: ■ Improve English reading, writing, and speaking skills ■ Obtain a better job ■ Become more involved in their children’s education ■ Learn to communicate family health needs ■ Become involved in community activities and learn citizenship skills The CASAS reading placement test will determine your class level. No one may enter after testing begins and no children are allowed in the testing room or on campus Students will be post-tested after the required hours of attendance are met. This computer-training course provides a basic introduction to Microsoft Office programs, word processing, Internet use, and sending/ receiving email. The course is designed for ESL students and any CAE student that wants to improve their computer skills Students will be introduced to computer vocabulary and use reading comprehension to better prepare them for career tech classes, as well as expected skills for college or a professional work environment Attendance is mandatory for this class. If a student has 2 absences in a row or 3 total absences, they will be dropped. 1st Qtr 8/21/23-10/26/23 M - TH 1:00-3:00 pm 2nd Qtr 10/30/23-1/19/24 M - TH 1:00-3:00 pm CITIZENSHIP CLASSES This class prepares foreign-born students for the citizenship interview process to become naturalized U.S. citizens. The N 400 is explained in detail as students fill out the form in class. U.S. history and government are integrated into the discussion of the 100 questions (Civics), and in preparation for the reading and writing portions of the test The teacher prepares a binder for each student to organize important documents to bring to their scheduled meeting with the USCIS. The teacher will also conduct a simulated interview towards the end of the semester In addition , a visit to the local USCIS office (either in person or virtually) affords students a first hand experience of what to expect when it is time for their test All citizenship testing is done by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services wwwuscisgov 3rd Qtr 1/22/24 - 3/22/24 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm 4th Qtr 4/2/24 - 6/7/24 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm FRESNO CITY COLLEGE ESL COURSE Listening and speaking course designed for multilingual speakers who wish to develop their oral language skills at the intermediate level This course can be taken concurrently with other English for multilingual courses 9/15/23 -12/8/23 Wed 5:30-7:50 pm Class is available for credit or non-credit. Orientation/ Registration: 8/30 5:30pm Room F-2 Orientation/Registration is mandatory to enroll in the course.
