Does the thought of using a sewing machine seem daunting? This class is great for the absolute beginner! We will cover all the basics you need to get started from setting up your machine to learning basic sewing techniques. Students will complete 3 projects. Students will learn the following techniques: Straight, French and encased seams, turning/ pivoting corners, box corners, hemming, creating handles and a casing, working with directional and non directional fabrics. The instructor has been sewing for 20+ years and is a 3rd generation seamstress. Students will need to provide their own sewing machine and materials. Are you self taught and would like some more guidance? Then this class is for you! We will cover the basics of quilt making fromquilting vocabulary, precision cutting and block construction to sandwiching and binding. Learn techniques to help you save time and quilt faster with more accuracy. Some sewing knowledge is a plus but not required. Students will need to provide their own sewing machine and materials. The first night of class is discussion only, you will not need to bring your machine. We will go over all the materials needed. This class will start you off in reviving this art. Crocheting will provide you with hours of relaxation and enjoyment while making beautiful creations for yourself and gifts for family and friends. Learn the basic stitches, how to read patterns and understand abbreviations, and select yarn. Bring sizes G, H and I crochet hooks (preferably Boye brand) and one skein of #4 (worsted weight) yarn in a light solid color to the first meeting. Patterns for simple projects will be provided. This is your chance to catch up on those UFO’s (unfinished projects), meet new folks, and enjoy a day of uninterrupted fun, creativity, and Sewcializing! Participants will have use of large tables, cutting mats, irons, ironing boards, and plenty of lighting. Please note that Open Sew is NOT the time to learn brand new techniques or sewing machine skills and features. While an instructor will be available for questions, individuals taking this class need to be able to work on their own for the most part.
