17 English as a Second Language (ESL) Call 559.327.2863 · Marcus Terrazas ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) QUARTER DATES 3rd Quarter 1/23/2023 - 3/31/2023 4th Quarter 4/11/2023 - 6/9/2023 Registration Procedure for ESL: ■ You must be at least 18 years old. ■ Fill out a registration form online at www.clovisadulteducation.com ■ The testing coordinator will contact you to schedule an orientation and placement test ■ If you do not show up for your scheduled test, you will not be able to register until the next term. ■ On testing day, bring a government issued photo I.D. or passport. ESL CLASSES ESL Classes are designed for adults who wish to improve their English language skills. There are morning and evening classes for beginning, intermediate, and advanced learners. Instruction includes listening, reading, writing and speaking skills presented in a fun yet challenging learning environment. Computer based curriculum complements lessons and reinforces learning the content. Classes prepare students to: ■ Improve English reading, writing, and speaking skills ■ Obtain a better job ■ Become more involved in their children’s education ■ Learn tocommunicate familyhealthneeds ■ Become involved in community activities and learn citizenship skills The CASAS reading placement test will determine your class level. No one may enter after testing begins and no children are allowed in the testing room or on campus. Students will be post-tested at the end of each quarter to see if they will advance to the next class level. Fifteen credits of lower level English may be transferred towards your high school diploma. CONVERSATION / PRONUNCIATION Have fun conversing with other students on relevant, real world topics and events. Practice the most common challenges in sound, spelling patterns, syllables, word endings, rhythms, and intonations. Introduction to Conversation/Pronounciation 3rd Quarter T-F 1:00-3:00 pm Intermediate / Advanced Level 3rd Quarter 1:00-3:00 pm & 5:30 - 8:30 pm 4th Quarter 1:00-3:00 pm & 5:30 - 8:30 pm CITIZENSHIP CLASSES This class prepares foreign-born students for the citizenship interviewprocess tobecomenaturalized U.S. citizens. The N 400 is explained in detail as students fill out the form in class. U.S. history and government are integrated into the discussion of the 100 questions (Civics), and in preparation for the reading andwriting portions of the test. The teacher prepares a binder for each student to organize important documents to bring to their scheduledmeetingwiththeUSCIS.The teacherwill alsoconduct asimulated interviewtowards theend of thesemester. Inaddition, avisit tothe localUSCIS office (either inpersonor virtually) affords students a first hand experience of what to expect when it is time for their test. Practice your listening and speaking skills and feel more confident about your English abilities! Student health fee of $15 required by Fresno City College.
